The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game Gameplay (40 minutes!)

After many days without news, the last couple of weeks we got a lot of news related to The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game, which will be releasing soon along with the movie. After a trailer last week, we finally have a gameplay of the game, which shows us how it'll be. This gameplay lasts 40 minutes, so I decided to review it in two different parts. This game will be a big change for the LEGO video games formula, possibly the biggest one.

As you can see in the gameplay, this will be a game with many changes. We will have the LEGO Worlds building and object discovering mechanics, combined with a classic LEGO game, but at the same time, for the first time ever, it'll not be divided in levels but in maps. That shows us that it'll have a unique style, with RPG elements, without being completely one. This game is the one I'm most excited, because I want to test the new game style it will offer.

Gameplay review:

PART 1

1. LEGO Worlds' Building Style

As I have mentioned before, this game will have a construction style similar to the one in LEGO Worlds, and also the tools. Now with this gameplay we can see you will also be able to discover objects and save them in your inventory. This is for being able to place them when you need them, in with the building tools. Besides, to build, you will need small bricks you obtain by destroying things. Each build requires a different quantity. This function will make this game one of the best ever.

2. Character Grid

With all the changes coming to this game, we have a new character grid style. Now they will be available in a menu where you select them. They appear in squares, and the ones you don't have appear blocked.

3. Master Pieces

The Master Pieces, will be a new function of the game, which need to be recollected. They will be the replacement of the golden bricks, but now they have an extra function. They will appear in all the hub world or by completing missions. The new function they have, is that when you have the ones you need, you will be able to unlock planets, which will have their own hub world.

4. Game Style

Something that kept my attention, is that we will get elements of an RPG, without being one completely. It still is an adventure genre, but the difference with other games is that you can unlock "maps". In this game you will be able to progress the story in the maps, explore them or do side missions, but there will not be levels.

5. Build Attack

A new combat style that this game will have, is the Build Attack. It is a build that help you destroying enemies, it's a very creative functions and changes the combat style.

PART 2

6. Scanner Binoculars

A new build, besides the construction tools, is the scanner binoculars. This tool will have the function of revealing hidden LEGO objects. It's similar to the x ray ability we have seen in other LEGO games, but this time it will be a tool and not an ability.

7. Vehicle Grid

With the gameplay, the vehicle grid was revealed. This will be called "Vehicle Library". You will be able to select the vehicle you want to use from there. There will be simple vehicles like cars, but there will also be special vehicles, which are from the movie. Those vehicles can work as a way of transport or as a weapon. The first vehicle that was revealed is Ultrakatty.

8. Boss Fights

In the gameplay we were able to see a boss fight. It was against a giant DUPLO invader. The important thing here, is that the boss fights will now be more complex, and you will need to do more things to defeat the enemy. Besides, the combat mechanic is awesome.

9. Sticker Gun

Another tool that will be available in the game, will be the "Sticker Gun" from General Mayhem. This gun will throw explosive stickers that help you destroy things.

10. Relics (Store)

During the gameplay we say in the map some hidden objects called "relics". We didn't see a lot of them, but they seem to include some important things. The description says that they can be redeemed in the game's store, so that confirms that you will be able to buy things with the game studs.

11. The Universe

The last thing in the gameplay is something called "the universe". To access, you need to get in a portal. The universe is where you can select different planets to explore. Each planet has its own hub world, and its own missions. To unlock planets you need Master Pieces, and there are a total of 475. There will be some systems in the universe, each with its own planets.

The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game will be available on February 26th for Xbox One, PS4, Steam and Switch (Digital). The physical versions of Switch will be available on March 26th.
